Within weeks of the outbreak of the Great War, the fighting on the Western Front developed into static trench warfare. As both sides struggled to gain dominance, new techniques for combat were devised. The Pioneers are the engineering corps of the Ostarr military, and as such are responsible for constructing fortifications, as well as clearing obstacles for men and equipment. This task often took them deep into No Man's Land, and close to the enemy. Eventually they developed a synthesis of tactics with the other infantry formations. Equipping themselves with melee weapons and close-range submachine guns allowed them to destroy the enemy, heavy armor allows them to get close enough to do it. Thus the Sturm Pioneers were created to undertake the most dangerous tasks in No Man's Land
